The State of the Church - The White Horse Inn

We all have heard the saying, "Read it and weep." Well, watch this video clip and weep.

I think that this is based on Dr. Mike Horton's recent book Christless Christianity and accompanying DVD by the same title.

What caught my eye was Dr. Bryan Chapell, President of my alma mater, Covenant Theological Seminary, commenting about the decline in biblical literacy among incoming theological students. This is the bitter fruit grown by megachurches and the church growth movement.

I remember when we were at CTS, it was said that about half didn't pass that exam. That's a pretty significant drop within the last decade. I often thought the reason for this may have been from the success of RUF, where guys get converted in college and decide to head into ministry after graduation without the time to be immersed in the Bible. But obviously, the problem is much bigger than that.

Thanks for the video, that was an impressive line-up of speakers with a consistent message.

Wayne,

I do remember a number of folks needing to take additional training to get up to speed. Some even grew up in the PCA. I didn't have that benefit as I came to faith in college. But prior to seminary I had immersed myself in a Bible reading program for several years so that I was able to pass that exam with a pretty high mark.

Dr. Chapell's comments are pretty sobering about our own denomination and the slippage that has occurred over the last 20 years. It's easy to point fingers at those other churches and denominations but we have our work cut out for us in the PCA.

Good video, it at least gives me hope that there are many others who share these same concerns. How different from the previous video you posted about marketing.

Thanks for posting the video, Dave.

Brian Chapell was my church camp counselor when he was a pastor in Sparta, Illinois. I wonder if I could have passed the CTS Bible knowledge exam back then? Probably not. I even wonder if I could pass it now.

The video makes me want to redouble our efforts at home. Our kids haven't yet figured out that most churched kids don't get daily or near-daily Bible reading and instruction at home like they do.
